A Lake Elsinore couple was killed but their baby survived being thrown from the car during a rollover crash Saturday night, Aug. 15, on I-15 in Corona. The crash was reported at 7:50 p.m. on a section of the interstate between Ontario and Magnolia avenues. Rosio Ibarra was also pregnant with twins at the time, thus making the death toll to include two adults, and two unborn babies.
California Highway Patrol investigators are still trying to understand why the Chevrolet Tahoe suddenly veered to the right on I-15 in Corona on Saturday night, struck a granite embankment and rolled over, killing two (and two unborn babies) but sparing the baby in the vehicle.
Jose De Jesus Ibarra-Espinoza, 32, and Rosio Ibarra, 26, both of Lake Elsinore, were pronounced dead at the scene. CHP Officer Travis Monks said Monday, Aug. 17, that Rosio Ibarra was in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt. Ibarra-Espinoza had his seat belt on, Monks said.
The child was not properly restrained and was ejected from the Tahoe, Monks said. He didn’t know whether the child was in a safety seat that wasn’t secured, or was not secured at all. Corona Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeremy Verderber said Saturday that the child, thought to be about 1-1/2 years old, was found outside the Tahoe in a safety seat.
Monks said there was no indication that other vehicles were involved, but anyone who believes they have information on the cause of the crash should call the CHP at 951-637-8000.
Family Update: 8/19/20 12pm: Family members are stating that on 8/20/15 the infant ejected from the car due to not being properly restrained was going to be moved out of ICU and has been “more responsive and more alert”
